Blast Baskets for Aero Engine Test Beds

Project: Blast Baskets for Aero Engine Test Beds
Client: Rolls Royce
Location: Derby, East Kilbride, Cardiff

WEC Group has fabricated and installed multiple Test Beds for various organisations such as Rolls Royce (Test Bed 54 and 80), General Electrics based in Wales and BAE Systems in Scotland.
One of our most recent projects is a 17m long x 6.5m diameter blast basket for the worlds largest indoor engine test bed facility at Rolls Royce, Derby.

The testbed will support engines such as Trent XWB and Trent 100 and will also be able to facilitate the UltraFan, which is Rolls Royce’s engine for the next generation of aircraft.

Silence Control Exhaust Stack Fabrication

WEC Fabrication successfully completed the manufacture of a high-specification Silence Control Exhaust Stack for a key customer in the energy sector. Designed and fabricated to meet exacting requirements, this complex structure was delivered within a strict 16-week lead time, ensuring it was installed on schedule during a planned site shutdown in Aberdeen. Constructed from a combination of 321-grade perforated stainless steel and carbon steel, the exhaust stack was built to withstand high temperatures and demanding environmental conditions. The structure comprised 10 separate fabrications, each measuring approximately 4.2 metres wide and weighing over 5 tonnes. Once fully assembled, the stack was meticulously insulated with glass fibre to enhance thermal efficiency and noise reduction.

Project: Arches of Oman

Our architectural metalwork division, m-tec, was commissioned to fabricate a striking 12-metre-high architectural stainless steel water feature, now a centerpiece in the private gardens adjacent to the Royal Opera House in Muscat, Oman. Designed by renowned sculptor Giles Rayner of GR Sculpture Ltd, the sculpture embodies a seamless blend of artistry and engineering. The Duplex stainless steel structure was meticulously fabricated and polished by m-tec’s expert engineers at their UK headquarters. The project took three and a half years from concept development to final installation, with rigorous quality control at every stage.

Project: Ground Support Platforms and Wing Trolley
Client: Airbus Hamburg

Our specialist Aerospace division manufactured and supplied 42 different ground support platforms to be used during the various build stages of Airbus A320 Aircrafts in Hamburg. This multi-million-pound project was manufactured in the UK over 18 months and then installed in Germany by our specialist steel erection team. The platforms were manufactured in Mild Steel and painted white. These were then delivered and installed in Hamburg by our expert team.

Meads Reach Stainless Steel Footbridge

Project: Meads Reach Bridge
Location: Bristol, UK

Meads Reach Bridge Temple Quay II, Bristol The Meads Reach Bridge was a joint project between m-tec, Niall McLaughlin Architects, Cyril Swett, Gleeds, Price & Myers and Dean & Dyball for Castlemore Securities to renovate Temple QUAY II in Bristol. m-tec fabricated the 55-metre, 75-tonne stainless steel pedestrian walkway in-house from 2205 duplex stainless steel. Its construction was made from eight sections which were delivered individually to the Bristol location.

Pooley Bridge – Stainless Steel Road Bridge

Project: Pooley Bridge
Location: Lake District

In collaboration with Knights Architects, Eric Wright Civil Engineering, and Cumbria County Council, this innovative three-layer stainless steel road bridge is the first of its kind in the UK. Spanning 40 feet across the River Eamont, the structure is constructed from 110 tonnes of 2205 stainless steel and concrete. Owing to the scale of the project, the structure was fabricated in four sections and required one of the largest cranes in Britain for installation. Its construction involved approximately 13,000 hours of skilled labour, and the bridge was officially opened to the public in spring 2020.
