Client Requirements & Project Challenges

WEC Fabrication was approached by a client in the subsea industry to manufacture a high-spec decompression chamber built to BSEN5500 Category 1 Vessel standards. The project required one-inch-thick boiler plate construction, 100% x-ray inspection of all welds, and third-party inspection conducted by Lloyds.

In parallel, a separate contract in the nuclear sector required the fabrication of a highly specialised fluorine cell. This vessel had strict material specifications, incorporating a combination of boiler plate, stainless steel, Monel, and copper. To comply with PED5500 Category 2 Vessel standards, WEC was required to secure seven new welder qualifications and develop additional welding procedures—each approved by a PED-certified body.

Our Approach & Engineering Expertise

Leveraging decades of experience in pressure vessel manufacturing, WEC Fabrication approached both projects with a commitment to precision, safety, and compliance. All fabrication work was conducted in line with PED 97/23/EC, BSEN5500, and ASME VIII standards. Our rigorous quality control process included qualified Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), hydrostatic and air pressure testing, and regular inspections by third-party notified bodies.

WEC’s in-house fabrication capacity—accommodating units up to 6 metres in diameter and 30 tonnes in a single lift—enabled us to manage every stage of production with minimal outsourcing, ensuring full traceability and quality control.

Results & Industry Impact

Both the decompression chamber and fluorine cell were delivered on time, meeting all client specifications and regulatory requirements. The successful execution of these projects further reinforced WEC Fabrication’s reputation as a trusted partner for complex, high-integrity fabrications in critical sectors.
