Meads Reach Bridge

Introduction
The Meads Reach Bridge is a striking example of innovative engineering and specialist metal fabrication. Forming the focal point of Bristol’s £200 million regeneration scheme, the bridge weighs 75 tonnes and spans 200 feet. It was entirely fabricated from stainless steel, highlighting the company’s expertise in complex architectural structures.

Project Overview
Constructed at a cost of £1.8 million, the bridge provides a vital connection between Temple Quay harbour and Bristol city centre. As well as improving accessibility, it adds a dramatic visual element to the landscape. The design features thousands of perforations that allow light to pass through, creating an eye-catching effect and enhancing its architectural appeal.

Fabrication and Construction
The team delivered it with precision and professionalism, demonstrating the company’s adaptability. Key stages in the process included:

• A team of 25 skilled fabricators and eight designers working over an eight-month period
• Fabrication of the bridge in eight individual sections, which were transported to Bristol for final assembly
• On-site welding of the sections to achieve a seamless, integrated finish

Installation Challenges
Installing the bridge in August was a major engineering task. One of Europe’s largest cranes was required to lift the structure into place. At the central point above the water, the load reached around 1,500 tonnes, underscoring the complexity and scale of the operation.

Impact and Industry Recognition
The successful delivery of the Meads Reach Bridge opened new opportunities for WEC Group, generating interest in additional high-profile projects, including potential contracts for the 2012 Olympic Games.
