Project Overview
We were privileged to play a key role in the creation of the Birmingham 21 Memorial, a powerful and moving tribute to the victims of the 1974 Birmingham pub bombings. Conceived by artist Anu Patel, the memorial features three 15-foot steel trees, each standing in a bespoke planter made from a striking combination of Corten and stainless steel. The contrast of materials enhances the installation’s visual presence while symbolising strength and remembrance.
A Thoughtful and Enduring Tribute
Each tree holds seven precision-crafted steel leaves, with the names and ages of the 21 victims laser-cut into the undersides. These subtle yet powerful details create a lasting tribute, offering a personal and reflective space for families, the public, and future generations to honour those lost.
Expert Fabrication and Seamless Installation
Over a 24-week period, our skilled fabrication team brought the design to life, producing the trees entirely in-house. The installation was carefully managed at Birmingham New Street Station and Grand Central, ensuring the memorial was not only visually striking but also structurally sound. Collaboration between the artist, client, and m-tec was central to the project’s success.
Honouring Lives Through Collaboration
Working on this memorial was a deeply meaningful experience for our team. Collaborating closely with Anu Patel and Birmingham City Council, the project aimed to deliver more than just an artwork, it was about creating a permanent and dignified space of remembrance.
At the unveiling, Anu Patel expressed her hope that the prominent location of the memorial would offer comfort to the families of the victims and serve as an important reminder of the events of 1974 for generations to come.
