Bespoke Stainless Steel DNA Water Feature for Hospital Installation

m-tec, part of WEC Group, was commissioned to manufacture and install a bespoke stainless steel water feature for a hospital site. Designed to resemble the structure of a DNA helix, the feature was created to provide an attractive focal point for patients, visitors and staff while withstanding year-round outdoor conditions.

The completed structure combines a mirror-polished 316 stainless steel upper section with a brushed stainless steel base, creating a striking contrast that catches the light and enhances the movement of the water.

Design and Manufacture

As the feature was intended for permanent outdoor installation, 316 grade stainless steel was selected for its excellent corrosion resistance and durability.

The DNA-inspired design presented several fabrication challenges, requiring precise forming, assembly and finishing to achieve the desired appearance. Once fabrication was complete, the upper section was mirror polished to create a reflective finish, while the base was given a brushed finish to provide contrast and complement the overall design.

Despite the complexity of the project, the entire feature was manufactured by a team of just two skilled fabricators.

Complete Water System Installation

In addition to manufacturing the water feature itself, m-tec installed the complete operating system.

This included the reservoir tank, water circulation pipework and pump system, ensuring the feature was ready for operation once installed on site. The system was designed to provide reliable performance while remaining easy to maintain.

A smartphone-controlled speed adjustment system was also incorporated, allowing the flow rate of the water to be increased or decreased remotely through an app. This gives site operators the flexibility to tailor the feature’s appearance and operation as required.
